Sake coffee is one of the most unusual coffees on our shelves. Here is what makes it different, and how to choose.
What is sake coffee?
Green coffee beans are soaked in a Japanese spirit so its aroma seeps into the beans, and then they are roasted. The cup tastes like a dark roast with a gentle hint of the spirit: sake, shochu, whisky, brandy and more.
The Muu COFFEE × M3 Coffee limited range
- Kato Kichibee Born GOLD Junmai Daiginjo: made with sake from a Fukui brewery. Lavish aroma and a silky, layered cup, great after dinner.
- Miyashita Shuzo Shodai Kamezo Shochu: a rice shochu aged in sherry casks, giving a sweet, soft finish. Good hot or iced.
- Fuji Takasago Single Malt Whisky: single malt from the foot of Mount Fuji. Malt sweetness meets bittersweet coffee.
Depending on the spirit, you can choose a regular pack, a single drip bag pack, or 5-pack drip bags that are easy to try or share.
The original MUU COFFEE line
MUU also works with breweries across Japan: Whiskey, Junmai Ginjo, Brandy, Rum and Craft Gin.
Prefer it without the spirit?
M3's own Moya Daily drip bags come in five blends for different times of day, and the M3 Coffee Cubes dissolve in hot water, cold water or milk.
Brew it well
Hang the drip bag on a warmed cup, bloom with a little hot water for 10–20 seconds, then pour about 180–190 ml in two or three stages. A gooseneck kettle like the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro makes the pour easy to control.
